PALM SUNDAY — Year A

**Alternate** Second Reading from Bruce Sanguin’s If Darwin Prayed: Prayers for Evolutionary Mystics

A reading from “If Darwin Prayed, Prayers for Evolutionary Mystics” by Bruce Sanguin

From the perspective of evolutionary Christian spirituality, I interpret this event as Jesus consenting to the evolutionary pull of the cosmos in fulfillment of his choice to proclaim and enact the kindom of God. When the religious authorities warned Jesus to silence the crowds, he expressed a kind of evolutionary inevitability in his response: “If these people were to remain silent, even the stones would cry out” (Luke 19:39).  The people assumed their cosmological vocation of being the voice of all creation when they declared that this one, who came in the name of God,  represented divine Reality (and not, by inference, Caesar); 13.7 billion years of creation had been waiting for this one to show up.  and so all of creation spreads its cloaks and joins in a canticle of the cosmos:”Blessed is the king who comes in the name of our God!” (Luke 19:38).
