THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT — Year A
First Reading: Exodus 17:3-7
A reading from the book of Exodus.
Tormented by thirst, the people bitterly complained against Moses, “Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Was it just to have us die of thirst with our children and our cattle?”
Moses cried out to God, “What am I to do with these people? A little more and they will stone me!” The Most High God answered, “Go over there in front of the people, along with some of
the elders of Israel; as you go, hold in your hand the staff with which you struck the Nile. I will be standing there in front of you on the rock of Horeb. Strike the rock, and the water will flow
from it for the people to drink.”
Moses did so, in the presence of the elders. The place was called Massah and Meribah, because the Israelites quarreled there and put Our God to the test, saying, “Is Our God in our midst or not?”

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 95
R: If today you hear God’s voice, harden not your hearts.
Come, let us sing joyfully to God;
let us acclaim the Rock of our salvation.
Let us greet God with thanksgiving;
let us joyfully sing psalms.

Come, let us bow down in worship;
let us kneel before the God who made us.
For the Most High is Our God,
and we are the people God shepherds, the flock God guides.

O, that today you would hear God’s voice:
“Harden not your hearts as at Meribah,
As in the days of Massah in the desert,
where your ancestors tempted me;
they tested me though they had seen my works.”
