PALM SUNDAY — Year A

**Alternate** First Reading: “Cosmic Procession” from Bruce Sanguin’s If Darwin Prayed: Prayers for Evolutionary Mystics

A reading from the book If Darwin Prayed: Prayers for Evolutionary Mystics by Bruce Sanguin.

Cosmic Procession

(John 12:12-22, Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-40)

God of galaxies and gerbils,

and this “gay great happening illimitably earth”

with great hope and celebration

we join the process of life

en route to Jerusalem,

honouring the Christ,

in Jesus,

as alpha and omega.

The palm branches we throw down-

royal carpet for His passing-

are our own lives,

offered as hallelujahs

that it has all come to this:

Fourteen billion years it has taken

to come to this One,

arriving as servant, though honoured as King;

as peasant, though Lord of compassion;

no formal education, though born as Wisdom;

dormant in the starts, gestating in the pregnant Earth,

and through Mary, Mother of God.

What joy is ours as we take our place

in the great procession of life,

heralding and blessing

this One who comes in your name,

and all who are coming

with a song of holiness on their lips

and a yearning for wholeness in their hearts.

Blessed,

blessed,

blessed

is this one who comes in your name! Amen

PALM SUNDAY — Year A

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 22

R: My God, my God, why have You deserted me?

All who see me jeer at me,

they toss their heads and sneer,

“You relied on your God, let your God save you!

If your God is your mend, let your God rescue you!”

R: My God, my God, why have You deserted me?

A pack of dogs surrounds me,

a gang of villains closes me in.

They tie me hand and foot

and leave me lying in the dust of death.

R: My God, my God, why have You deserted me?

They divide my garments among them

and cast lots for my clothes.

Do not stand aside, Adonai.

O my strength, come quickly to my help.

R: My God, my God, why have You deserted me?

Then I will proclaim Your Name,

praise You in full assembly:

You who fear the Most High, praise God!

Entire race of Israel, revere God!

R: My God, my God, why have You deserted me?
