FEAST OF THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD — Year A

Gospel: Matthew 3:13-17

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew.

Jesus, coming from Galilee, appeared before John at the Jordan to be baptized. John tried to dissuade Jesus, saying, “I should be baptized by you, and yet you come to me!” But Jesus replied, “Leave it this way for now. We must do this if we would fulfill all of God’s demands.” So John gave in to Jesus. After Jesus was baptized, he came directly out of the water. Suddenly the sky was opened and Jesus saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and hovering over him. With that, a voice from the heavens said, “This is my Only Begotten, on whom my favor rests.”
