Self-Help International is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-governmental organization founded in Waverly, Iowa in 1959 with a mission to alleviate hunger by helping people help themselves. Self-Help operates integrated sustainable development programs in Ghana, West Africa and Nicaragua, Central America to help rural families improve quality of life with dignity, with emphasis on improving nutrition and food security through agricultural and economic development, empowering women and girls, and accessing clean water.
Our September 8 First Sunday collection will support the expansion of Self-Help’s Teen Girls Club to two more communities in rural Ghana. The Teen Girls Club is increasing high school admission rates for young women and preventing teenage pregnancy by providing a space for girls in junior high school to come together to support each other, receive supplemental tutoring and reading assistance, learn practical and marketable skills, and engage in discussions around confidence, women’s health, and self-esteem. Checks may be written either to “Self-Help International” or “DMIEC.” Thank you for your generous support of this and all of our First Sunday organizations!
