First Reading: Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14

A reading from the book of Revelation.

I, John, saw another angel coming up from the east, holding the seal of the living God.  The angel called in a powerful voice to the four angels who were given power to ravage the land and the sea and said, “Do no harm to the land or the sea or the trees until we imprint this seal on the foreheads of the faithful of our God.”  I heard the number of those who were so marked – one hundred and forty-four thousand, from every tribe of Israel.

After this, I saw before me a huge crowd which no one could count, from every nation and race, people and tongue.  They stood before the judgment seat and the Lamb, dressed in long white robes and holding palm branches in their hands.  They cried out in a loud voice, “Salvation is from Our God, who is seated on the judgment seat, and from the Lamb!”  All the angels who were standing around the judgment seat and the elders and the four living creatures fell down before the judgment seat to worship God.  They said, “Amen!  Praise and glory and wisdom and thanksgiving and honor and power and might be to our God forever and ever.  Amen!”

Then one of the elders asked me, “Who do you think they are, all dressed in white?  And where have they come from?”  I replied, “You know better than I.”  The elder then told me, “These are the ones who have survived the great period of trial; they have washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

The Word of God recorded in the book of Revelation.

Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 24

R:  O God, this is the people who long to see Your face.

The world and all that is in it belongs to Our God

the earth and all who live on it.

Our God built it in the deep waters beneath the earth

and laid its foundations in the ocean depths.

R:  O God, this is the people who long to see Your face.

Who has the right to go up Our God’s hill?

Who is allowed to enter Our God’s Temple?

Those who are pure in act and in thought,

who do not worship idols, or make false promises.

R:  O God, this is the people who long to see Your face.

Our God will bless them.

God their savior will declare them innocent.

Such are the people who come to God,

who come into the presence of God.

R:  O God, this is the people who long to see Your face.
