SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Days for Girls
DESCRIPTION:Our June 14 First Sunday collection recipient is DAYS FOR GIRLS. Days for Girls serves young women in many areas throughout the world\, providing reusable feminine products where they have not been available. Although it may seem that this should not be a problem\, or one easily solved\, that is not the case. The lack of feminine products prevents girls from going to school\, as they are unable to leave their homes. In fact\, it is not uncommon for them to have to sit on pieces of cardboard throughout their cycle due to a lack of menstrual pads. These girls are considered dirty or unclean. The founder of Days for Girls has spent many years developing Days for Girls Kits to allow young women freedom to attend school with the added result of breaking the cycle of poverty. Today Days for Girls has reached more than 1.5 million individuals in 140+ countries with DfG Kits and menstrual health education. Learn more here. SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - The Connection Cafe
DESCRIPTION:The Connection Café has served the hungry and homeless in downtown Des Moines since 2004. Five days a week it offers free lunch and a place to gather in community over the mid-day meal to more than 100 guests. (During the current health crisis\, only sack lunches for take-away are being served in the inner courtyard at St. John’s Lutheran Church.) \nWith only one paid staff coordinator\, The Connection Café relies on the generosity of volunteers to provide and prepare the food and help serve. Donations of food\, supplies\, personal care items\, bus tokens\, and cash are put to immediate use. Cash donations purchase food items and supplies necessary for serving. The need for assistance for marginalized communities is great in the Des Moines metro\, and The Connection Café serves a critically important role. The Connection Café operates under the auspices of The Bridge\, a 501c3 non-profit ecumenical organization comprised of the four downtown churches: St. John’s Lutheran Church\, St. Ambrose Catholic Cathedral\, First United Methodist\, and the Cathedral Church of St. Paul\, Episcopal. Volunteer groups providing and serving lunch come from more than 50 congregations in greater Des Moines. SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Valley Disaster Relief
DESCRIPTION:Originally formed to help natural disaster victims\, Valley Disaster Relief now focuses on helping families\, individuals\, other nonprofits\, and churches in the Des Moines metro area with tree service. They are a volunteer group with no paid staff and do not charge for their services. With 20+ chainsaws\, a bucket truck\, chip truck\, chipper\, and a mini skid\, in 2019 they helped over 240 families and provided over 1\,900 hours of volunteer time to individuals and nonprofit organizations with tree trimming and removal services. In the last 6 years they have exceeded 1\,000 jobs. They help Habitat for Humanity\, local and regional churches\, non-profits like Hope Ministries\, Camp Sunnyside\, Mosaic\, summer camps\, and individuals on fixed incomes unable to afford tree trimming or removal\, and currently partner with the cities of Des Moines\, Urbandale\, Pleasant Hill\, and West Des Moines.  They have also responded to tornado damage throughout Iowa including Lake Panorama\, Dallas Center\, Correctionville\, Mapleton\, Marshalltown\, Earlham\, Garwin\, Parkersburg\, Thurman\, and Ottumwa. Since they do not charge for services\, their continued work is entirely funded by donations. \nThe First Sunday collection will occur as usual\, except checks should be mailed by April 5 to: \n                                     DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA  50310 \nChecks may be made out to “Valley Church” with “VDR” in the memo line\, or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.
