DESCRIPTION:Due to the Independence Day holiday\, July’s First Sunday collection will be July 11 and will benefit hurricane relief in Honduras through the Dubuque Sisters of St Francis. \nSister Pat Farrell will be joining us from Honduras where she has ministered for several years. In November 2020 Honduras was struck with two hurricanes that caused mudslides destroying or damaging many homes. This in turn has caused many to flee from their homeland to head toward the United States hoping to find a better life. Sr Pat will share how our donations will be used to help the people be able to stay in Honduras. \nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO:     DMIEC\, P.O. SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection: Latinx Knock and Drop Iowa
DESCRIPTION:Latinx Knock and Drop Iowa will be the recipient of our First Sunday collection on June 6.   \nNearly half of the Hispanic population in the US is food insecure\, partially due to the pandemic and subsequent unemployment. Latinx Knock and Drop Iowa\, a new 501c3 non-profit\, addresses this acute and ongoing need in our local community. Beginning in March 2020 with deliveries of 50 twice weekly food boxes\, this creative small volunteer organization now reaches over 2\,000 households (including over 1\,100 children) through a neighborhood food pantry. Latinx Knock and Drop Iowa is the only Des Moines metro food pantry in which Spanish is the primary language. Earning trust in the community has helped them reach more people during this unsettling time.  \nThey do not work in a vacuum\, however\, partnering early on with Eat Greater Des Moines\, Capital City Fruit\, and La Tapatia\, and now also with Food Bank of Iowa\, HyVee\, and others. They have expanded to include personal hygiene items and recently offered COVID19 immunizations serving over 600 people. Though food stability is the main purpose and focus\, they have hopes of providing a computer room\, English and citizenship classes\, resume’ workshop and more for the local Hispanic community.  \nJoin us Sunday\, June 6\, to hear from our First Sunday recipient’s director/advocate about this vital and vibrant agency serving the needs of people of color in our community. DESCRIPTION:Mary J. Treglia Community House (“MJTCH”) will be the recipient of our First Sunday collection on May 2. Treglia Community House (“MJTCH”) was established in 1921 to serve the needs of newcomers to the Sioux City area. The organization identifies the needs of the immigrant population then works to create self-sufficiency through education\, services\, advocacy\, and celebration of diversity. MJTCH offers programming such as translation/interpretation\, legal immigration\nservices\, Adult English Language Learning\, cultural competency and community outreach\, family services\, and a DHS accredited preschool program.\nApproximately 20% of the Siouxland community speak a language other than English as their first language\, resulting in a large sector of the community relying on rumors and secondhand\ninformation to guide then when making decisions about health\, safety\, and COVID-19. MJTCH collaborates with public media to produce the local daily news in multiple languages (Spanish\,\nOromo\, Somali\, Amharic\, and Vietnamese). This project is supported solely by grants and donations.
