We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 4:30 p.m. each Friday. \nMeet in the west DMIEC parking lot to distribute posters honoring Black lives\, then proceed to the sidewalk in front of the DMIEC building. We will open with a prayer and say the names of those who have died\, then stand in silence. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Lawn chairs welcome. Cancelled if raining\, snowing\, sleeting\, etc.

SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Meals from the Heartland
DESCRIPTION:You don’t have to look far to see hunger; it’s right here in Iowa. It is a staggering problem – not just in developing countries\, but here at home and across the nation.\nEvery 10 seconds a child dies of hunger-related issues. \nTo help support our Iowa-based meals distribution partners\, Meals from the Heartland will host a focused day of service on January 17\, 2022 (Martin Luther King Day). Our goal is to package and distribute 150\,000 life-saving Taco Mac meals to our local food pantries in Dallas and Polk County. \nMeals from the Heartland does not receive government funding. We need an additional $5\,000 to package these meals on MLK Day. Thank you\, DMIEC\, for making a difference to help feed starving children and families. SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Relief for Haiti
DESCRIPTION:Southwest Haiti was hit in August by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that killed over 2\,200 Haitians. Medical care collapsed amid damaged hospitals\, too few doctors\, and the spread of cholera and malaria. An estimated 53\,000 homes were destroyed\, 25\,000 people displaced\, 171 schools totally demolished and 566 damaged. \n1.2 million Haitians were affected\, including 500\,000 children. Rain\, floods and mudslides complicate humanitarian efforts in a country that is also in dangerous political turmoil after the death of the president.  Metal sheeting\, tarps\, food\, water\, and medical supplies are urgently needed to support daily needs of Haiti. Many live with no running water\, electricity\, jobs\, and fear of kidnappings and extortion by gangs. \nDMIEC supported Haiti after the last earthquake in 2009\, when Sr. Mary came to talk with us. Nancy Hibbard\, who worked with Sr. Mary and has worked and volunteered in Haiti a total of 34 years\, will join us on Zoom to discuss the needs and the use of funding to support Haiti. DESCRIPTION:Several people over the last few months have suggested that we have an outside gathering for the sake of seeing each other in person before the cold weather sends us all inside.  With that in mind\, please bring your own drink and/or breakfast and a lawn chair. Every half hour we will play “Fruit Basket Upset” so everyone can visit with as many friends as possible. \nBuilding open for restroom use; masks required in the building.

SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Children and Family Urban Movement (CFUM)
DESCRIPTION:Children and Family Urban Ministries (“CFUM”) will be our October First Sunday collection recipient on October 3.  CFUM was legally incorporated in December 1992\, but its ministry with neighbors on the near north side of Des Moines began more than 20 years before. The Breakfast Club was initiated by the congregation of Trinity United Methodist Church in 1968. The Supper Club began while Burns United Methodist Church\, Gatchel United Methodist Church\, and Trinity United Methodist Church were joined in the Inner City Parish.  Under the leadership of Carmen Lampe-Zeitler\, in 2013\, CFUM changed the name to Children and Family Urban Movement to show the broader expanse of their work.  (For more information about CFUM\, please visit their website. ) \nMark Slocum\, who is currently the Director of CFUM\, states that the basic necessities are paramount to the functioning of an individual.  The Supper Club provides an evening meal for 100-120 adults and children Monday through Friday.  Mark says that they usually give out all the food within 30-40 minutes\, and there are rarely leftovers. \nMark reports that the donations from DMIEC to CFUM’s Supper Club will be used to supplement current donations\, to cover nights that CFUM does not have a meal sponsor\,  and will also supplement the Breakfast Club and snack program for children in the before- and after-school programs.  He said that for many children the dinner they receive at CFUM’s Supper Club will be the end of the food for them until the next day. \n Checks can be written either to “CFUM” or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  \nWe would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Ed Arnold of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.

SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice
DESCRIPTION:Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice will be our September First Sunday collection recipient on September 12 (** a week later than usual\, due to the Labor Day holiday**). \nWhile Iowa MMJ’s name may not yet be familiar to DMIEC members\, the work of this newly merged entity is well-known to many. In April 2021\, American Friends Service Committee of Iowa and Iowa Justice for our Neighbors formed Iowa MMJ to better advance their mutual legacy of service to Iowa’s migrant and refugee populations in designated areas of the state. Iowa MMJ remains an affiliate of the Justice for our Neighbors Network\, a national United Methodist Church immigration ministry. The stated ministry of Iowa MMJ\, a nonprofit organization\, is “to build a movement of justice led by immigrants and refugees in Iowa by providing high quality legal services and empowerment through organization.” Its legal services are available to low-income immigrants and refugees who financially qualify without regard to race\, gender\, or religion. Iowa MMJ operates monthly regional legal clinics in Des Moines\, Cedar Rapids\, Columbus Junction\, Decorah\, Ottumwa\, Marshalltown\, and Storm Lake. Iowa MMJ also serves immigrant victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. Nearly 2000 qualified low-income persons from 68 countries received legal services through Iowa MMJ’s parent organizations in 2020. \nIowa MMJ intends to use DMIEC First Sunday collection monies to support areas of activity and operation not otherwise supported by grant funding. Erica Johnson\, Executive Director for Iowa MMJ\, will join DMIEC’s Zoom service on September 12 to further inform us of Iowa MMJ’s vital work of service. \nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO:\nDMIEC\, P.O.
