Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nBeginning on Good Friday 2021\, we have held a weekly Sidewalk Solidarity event every Friday afternoon as weather permitted. We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 3:30 p.m. each Friday. \nMeet in the west DMIEC parking lot to distribute posters honoring Black lives\, then proceed to the sidewalk in front of the DMIEC building. We will open with a prayer and say the names of those who have died\, then stand in silence. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Lawn chairs welcome. Cancelled if raining\, snowing\, sleeting\, etc.

SUMMARY:Special Christmas Eve Collection - Catholic Worker House
DESCRIPTION:As has been our tradition\, the Christmas Eve collection will be for the Des Moines Catholic Worker House. It will help pay for upcoming repair projects at the Dingman House at 1310 7th St. in Des Moines: kitchen makeover (including patching holes in the ceiling from current and past plumbing issues) and sidewalk\, landscaping\, and porch repairs. With the help of many volunteers\, the  Worker House has served meals through another devastating year of the pandemic. In a kitchen sized for a single family\, they prepare 600-750 pounds of hot food each week and serve it out a side  window of the Dingman House. The south side of the house serves as the “storeroom” where folks can get anything from razors and groceries to blankets and clothing. \nPlease make checks out to “Catholic Worker House” and not to DMIEC. Checks should be mailed to: DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310. We would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Meals from the Heartland
DESCRIPTION:You don’t have to look far to see hunger; it’s right here in Iowa. It is a staggering problem – not just in developing countries\, but here at home and across the nation.\nEvery 10 seconds a child dies of hunger-related issues. \nTo help support our Iowa-based meals distribution partners\, Meals from the Heartland will host a focused day of service on January 17\, 2022 (Martin Luther King Day). Our goal is to package and distribute 150\,000 life-saving Taco Mac meals to our local food pantries in Dallas and Polk County. \nMeals from the Heartland does not receive government funding. We need an additional $5\,000 to package these meals on MLK Day. Thank you\, DMIEC\, for making a difference to help feed starving children and families. SUMMARY:Sidewalk Solidarity at DMIEC
DESCRIPTION:As a community\, we continue to learn how we can be more aware of the racial injustice in the world. Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nBeginning on Good Friday 2021\, we have held a weekly 4:00 p.m. Sidewalk Solidarity event every Friday afternoon as weather permitted. We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 4:30 p.m. each Friday. \nMeet in the west DMIEC parking lot to distribute posters honoring Black lives\, then proceed to the sidewalk in front of the DMIEC building. We will open with a prayer and say the names of those who have died\, then stand in silence. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Lawn chairs welcome. Cancelled if raining\, snowing\, sleeting\, etc.

SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Relief for Haiti
DESCRIPTION:Southwest Haiti was hit in August by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake that killed over 2\,200 Haitians. Medical care collapsed amid damaged hospitals\, too few doctors\, and the spread of cholera and malaria. An estimated 53\,000 homes were destroyed\, 25\,000 people displaced\, 171 schools totally demolished and 566 damaged. \n1.2 million Haitians were affected\, including 500\,000 children. Rain\, floods and mudslides complicate humanitarian efforts in a country that is also in dangerous political turmoil after the death of the president.  Metal sheeting\, tarps\, food\, water\, and medical supplies are urgently needed to support daily needs of Haiti. Many live with no running water\, electricity\, jobs\, and fear of kidnappings and extortion by gangs. \nDMIEC supported Haiti after the last earthquake in 2009\, when Sr. Mary came to talk with us. Nancy Hibbard\, who worked with Sr. Mary and has worked and volunteered in Haiti a total of 34 years\, will join us on Zoom to discuss the needs and the use of funding to support Haiti. No donated funds will go toward administrative costs. \nChecks can be written either to “Portage Area Community Charitable Trust” (which is linked to St. Mary’s Church in Portage\, WI) with “Haiti” in the memo line; or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.   \nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO:\nDMIEC\, P.O.
