SUMMARY:Good Friday Sidewalk Solidarity - *In-Person*
DESCRIPTION:As a community\, we continue to learn how we can be more aware of the racial injustice in the world. Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nAs we did on Good Friday 2021\, we will hold a 4:00 p.m. Sidewalk Solidarity event to demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 4:30 p.m. \nMeet in the west DMIEC parking lot to distribute posters honoring Black lives\, then proceed to the sidewalk in front of the DMIEC building. We will open with a prayer and say the names of those who have died\, then stand in silence. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Lawn chairs welcome. Cancelled if raining\, snowing\, sleeting\, etc.

DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday collection recipient for March will be Trees Forever.  For decades\, Trees Forever has helped thousands of community volunteers\, civic leaders\, government officials\, and landowners to plant and care for trees\, shrubs\, native grasses\, and plants. DESCRIPTION:DMIEC GROUP STUDY on COMPASSION \nMondays\, January 17\, 24\, 31 and February 7\, 14\, 21\, 3:00-4:15 p.m.\, via Zoom \nWednesdays\, January 19\, 26 and February 2\, 9\, 16\, 23\, 6:30-7:45 p.m.\, via Zoom \nAs a lead up to Lent\, Kevin Pokorny will offer a 6-week group study using Joyce Rupp’s book Boundless Compassion – Creating a Way of Life.  This is a personal transformation process for developing and deepening compassion in our lives\, our community\, and our world.  Joyce’s book is the foundation for her four-day Boundless Compassion retreat which Kevin has been through on two occasions.  He’s currently a member of the Boundless Compassion Core Team supporting Joyce’s compassion work with over 100 Boundless Compassion facilitators to bring compassion and self-compassion into our communities. \nThe group study will meet once a week for 6 weeks beginning the week of January 17.\nEach week is devoted to one topic of compassion.  You can participate in all 6 weeks or weeks that interest you.  There will be two group study sessions per week (see above). Participants\nwill need to purchase Joyce’s book at www.joycerupp.com  If interested\, please email Kevin at pokornyk@hotmail.com by Wednesday\, January 12. He’ll follow up with a more detailed description of the group study.

SUMMARY:Sidewalk Solidarity at DMIEC
DESCRIPTION:As a community\, we continue to learn how we can be more aware of the racial injustice in the world. Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nBeginning on Good Friday 2021\, we have held a weekly Sidewalk Solidarity event every Friday afternoon as weather permitted. We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 3:30 p.m. each Friday. \nMeet in the west DMIEC parking lot to distribute posters honoring Black lives\, then proceed to the sidewalk in front of the DMIEC building. We will open with a prayer and say the names of those who have died\, then stand in silence. Please wear a mask and maintain social distancing. Lawn chairs welcome. Cancelled if raining\, snowing\, sleeting\, etc.

SUMMARY:Special Christmas Eve Collection - Catholic Worker House
DESCRIPTION:As has been our tradition\, the Christmas Eve collection will be for the Des Moines Catholic Worker House. It will help pay for upcoming repair projects at the Dingman House at 1310 7th St. in Des Moines: kitchen makeover (including patching holes in the ceiling from current and past plumbing issues) and sidewalk\, landscaping\, and porch repairs. With the help of many volunteers\, the  Worker House has served meals through another devastating year of the pandemic. In a kitchen sized for a single family\, they prepare 600-750 pounds of hot food each week and serve it out a side  window of the Dingman House. The south side of the house serves as the “storeroom” where folks can get anything from razors and groceries to blankets and clothing. \nPlease make checks out to “Catholic Worker House” and not to DMIEC. Checks should be mailed to: DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310. We would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC.
