DESCRIPTION:COLLECTION RECIPIENT on AUGUST 7:  FRIENDS OF IOWA WOMEN PRISONERS \nFriends of Iowa Women Prisoners is an organization established in 1986 to work for systemic changes and improved conditions at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women in Mitchellville.  They advocate for long-term change that promotes and fosters healthy lives.  One way they do this is through a Scholarship Fund established in 2001 to enable women to earn college credit. These funds help cover tuition\, books\, and supplies. The Capital Dispatch is a nonprofit\, free of advertising and free to readers. Donations cover office and reporting expenses\, helping to expand news coverage. For example\, they have a paid intern this summer from Iowa State University\, and they pay a Drake University student for freelance stories. SUMMARY:Sidewalk Solidarity at DMIEC
DESCRIPTION:As a community\, we continue to learn how we can be more aware of the racial injustice in the world. Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nBeginning on Good Friday 2021\, we have held a weekly Sidewalk Solidarity event every Friday afternoon as weather permitted. We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 4:30 p.m. each Friday. \nMeet in the west DMIEC parking lot to distribute posters honoring Black lives\, then proceed to the sidewalk in front of the DMIEC building. We will open with a prayer and say the names of those who have died\, then stand in silence. Please bring a mask and maintain social distancing. Lawn chairs welcome. Cancelled if raining\, snowing\, sleeting\, etc.

DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday collection recipient for March will be Trees Forever.  For decades\, Trees Forever has helped thousands of community volunteers\, civic leaders\, government officials\, and landowners to plant and care for trees\, shrubs\, native grasses\, and plants. DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday collection recipient for March will be Greater Des Moines Habit for Humanity. \nMission: Seeking to put God’s love into action\, Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes\, communities\, and hope. \nVision: A world where everyone has a decent place to live. \nIn 2021\, GDM Habitat directly served 285 families in Polk\, Dallas\, and Jasper counties through affordable homeownership\, home repairs\, and financial counseling. Learn more at gdmhabitat.org. \nOur collection will support a Panel Build in DMIEC’s parking lot on Thursday\, May 26. This event will engage approximately 50 people from several different churches.
