SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nOn November 3rd\, the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network assisted 2\,494 unique individuals – setting a single-day record for the most people assisted. That was the busiest day on record in the 50-year history of the network of Des Moines metro pantries and the start of an extremely challenging period for our neighbors living without support from SNAP. Of the people assisted yesterday\, 1 in 3 were currently enrolled in SNAP. Earlier this year\, DMARC recorded the four busiest months of its nearly 50-year history.  Nearly 29\,000 people used at least one of DMARC’s 14 pantries in January and over 79\,000 unique individuals have done so in fiscal year 2025. \nTo learn more\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/  \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. DESCRIPTION:Readings: \nCHRISTMAS EVE COLLECTION\nOur traditional Christmas Eve collection will be for the Des Moines Catholic Worker House again this year. The collection will help with remodeling and maintenance projects for the Dingman House. In a kitchen sized for a single family\, the staff and volunteers prepare roughly 600-750 pounds of hot food each week. The guests also have access to canned and packaged food\, blankets\, clothing\, and personal hygiene items. \nChecks can be written either to “DMIEC” with “CWH remodeling” in the memo line OR to the “Catholic Worker House Fund\,” with “CWH remodeling” on the memo line. The Catholic Worker House Fund is a 501(c)(3) foundation. If you are not attending the Christmas Eve Service\, please mail checks to DMIEC\, PO Box 30065\, Des Moines\, Iowa 50310. SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nOn November 3rd\, the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network assisted 2\,494 unique individuals – setting a single-day record for the most people assisted. This is the busiest day on record in the 50-year history of the network of Des Moines metro pantries and the start of an extremely challenging period for our neighbors living without support from SNAP. Of the people assisted yesterday\, 1 in 3 were currently enrolled in SNAP. DESCRIPTION:COMMUNITY CONVERSATION after in-person worship on October 26 \nThe DMIEC council has identified three important issues for discussion: \n\n\n1. New signage in front of our building\, being planned by the Social Justice Committee. Given that some funding has been donated by a member\, we will hear about what type of sign might be erected\, the message on that sign\, and the details of getting it installed. \n\n\n2. Lighting/electrical/sound system improvements. The Building & Grounds and TechnologyCommittees are gathering information on transforming the ceiling lighting\, audio\, and grid design in our worship space. Our electrical system is old and parts are hard to replace. The council believes it is time to consider an entire revamp of our worship space ceiling design. Generous members have already agreed to put money forward towards this project\, and the council has also earmarked initial funds for the design. Members will hear an overall description of how we might proceed hiring a contractor to design a plan that would then be put forward for bids. Once bids are secured\, the proposal will be brought back to the community for a vote according to our Framework for Shared Decision-Making. \n\n\n3. Building use policy. The council recommends that a committee be formed to revisit our building use policy. Prior to the conversation on October 26\, the community is encouraged to read the policy on our website\, at https://www.dmiec.org/policy-for-use-of-dmiec-building-at- 3306-university/. (Or\, go to Stewardship/Building Use/Policy for Nonsponsored Use of DMIEC Building.) At our conversation\, we will hear how the council views the current policy limits our community needs. If the community votes to revisit the BUP\, a simple majority vote will start that process. We would then discuss the value of an ad hoc committee to rewrite the policy and ask for members to participate on that committee. All members could give input to the committee\, which would make recommendations to our congregation for approval.
