The fiscal year just ended was the busiest in DMARC emergency food pantries’ nearly 50-year history  The 22\,000 people assisted in June 2023 was the second highest number on record. 1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided. DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. 2022 saw a 53% increase in new pantry users over 2021.  1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022.  The DMARC pantries served over 53\,000 individuals in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry.  DMARC experienced a record-breaking number of people seeking food assistance in any March — 19\,410 visitors.  Almost 1\,500 of those were first-time visitors — also a record-breaking amount.  DMARC saw 1\,515 people come in to receive assistance on April 4 — the second highest number ever in the non-profit’s nearly 50-year existence.  The highest day? May 3 of this year. SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. 2022 saw a 53% increase in new pantry users over 2021.  1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022.  The DMARC pantries served over 53\,000 individuals in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry.  DMARC experienced a record-breaking number of people seeking food assistance in any March — 19\,410 visitors.  Almost 1\,500 of those were first-time visitors — also a record-breaking amount.  DMARC saw 1\,515 people come in to receive assistance on April 4 — the second highest number ever in the non-profit’s nearly 50-year existence.  The highest day? SUMMARY:Sidewalk Solidarity & Stations of the Cross
DESCRIPTION:As a community\, we continue to learn how we can be more aware of the racial injustice in the world. Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nBeginning on Good Friday 2021\, we have held a weekly Sidewalk Solidarity event every Friday afternoon as weather permitted. We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 4:00 p.m. each Friday. \nAt 4:00 p.m. each Friday\, we gather to honor Black lives lost to police violence.  We open with prayer inside DMIEC and speak their names\, then stand in silence for nine minutes in front of the building.  We go back inside to close with prayer\, song\, and reflection.  If weather is not good for outside\, we stay inside the building. \n*For Good Friday 2023\, our usual Sidewalk Solidarity will be combined with Stations of the Cross.*
