DESCRIPTION:SACRED GROUND:  Documentaries and Discussion \nWednesdays\, March 12 & 26\, 6:30–8:30 p.m.\, DMIEC \nSacred Ground is a film- and readings-based dialogue series on race\, grounded in faith. It is a sensitive\, prayerful resource offered by the Episcopal Church that creates space for difficult but respectful dialogue – the kind dialogue we’ve engaged in at DMIEC. \nLast fall\, several members of DMIEC embarked on the 11-session Sacred Ground journey. Reaching the last session\, as the question of “what’s next?” emerged\, the group decided to share part of their journey with the DMIEC community. They will present Sacred Ground films on two Wednesday evenings during Lent. All are invited to come view these powerful documentary films followed by enriching dialogue. \nMARCH 12:  Stepping onto Sacred Ground.  We will view the documentary American Creed. \nMARCH 26:  Whose Land? Exploring Indigenous History.  We will view the documentaries Doctrine of Discovery and Native Voices: Speaking to the Church and the World.  \n

We hope you will take a few minutes to read them ahead of our CC so that you will be familiar with the ideas the DD community has.  Do we agree with their ideas? \nAt the conclusion of this CC\, we will decide whether to proceed with an online vote. That vote would determine if DMIEC negotiators should continue with discussions with the DD community for sharing our space.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries ordinarily on the fourth Sunday of every month\, but on the fifth Sunday this December. \nThe need is real. \nDMARC recorded the four busiest months of its nearly 50-year history so far in 2024.  Over 29\,500 people used at least one of their 14 pantries in November\, setting an all-time record.  Please see additional information on November usage here. \nTo learn more\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/  Read DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. SUMMARY:Christmas Eve Special Collection for Catholic Worker House
DESCRIPTION:Our traditional Christmas Eve collection will be for the Des Moines Catholic Worker House again thisyear. The collection will help fund remodeling of the Dingman House bathroom. This is the bathroom that guests use and where they can take showers.  In a kitchen sized for a single family\, the staff and volunteers prepare roughly 600-750 pounds of hot food each week. The guests also have access to canned and packaged food\, blankets\, clothing\, and personal hygiene items. \nChecks can be written either to “DMIEC” with “Dingman House bathroom” in the memo line or to “Catholic Worker House Fund” with “Dingman House bathroom” in the memo line. The Catholic Worker House Fund is a 501(c)(3) foundation. If you are not attending the Christmas Eve Service\, please mail checks to DMIEC\, PO Box 30065\, Des Moines\, Iowa 50310. We would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Susan Barnes of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.

SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection – Sister Water Project
DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday collection recipient for December is Sister Water Project\, which was started 18 years ago by the Sisters of St. Francis in Dubuque. It helps supply safe water to people of Tanzania and Honduras. Sister Water Project has built more than 450 wells in Tanzania and more than 45 water systems in Honduras. All work is done by volunteers from the villages. The sisters do not charge for administration\, so 100% of donations are designated for the projects. First Sunday donations will be used to build a well in Tanzania. The cost of a well is $5\,500. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 24 we will have a members Community Conversation (CC) after our prayer service to discuss the feasibility of sharing space with another worshiping community\, such as Downtown Disciples.  Please plan to stay\, whether online or in-person\, to help us work through this issue. \nThe Council would like to thank the members of the Space Sharing committee\, which was borne out of our retreat held in August 2023:  Kathy Eastman\, Martha Gelhaus\, Jean Minahan\, Kathy Olah\, Lars Peterson\, Donna Richard-Langer\, Kathi Sircy\, Ivan Webber\, and Kris Wells.  They have spent countless hours in discussion and research\, with the final report and their recommendation provided in a position paper presented at the Community Conversation on 10/27/2024 and posted on our website\, as part of the notes from that October 27th CC. \nWe need to hear from members about your thoughts\, questions\, and ideas.  At the conclusion of this CC\, we will decide whether to proceed with an online vote.  That vote would allow DMIEC members to proceed with discussions with the Downtown Disciples community for sharing our space. \nIn advance of the CC\, the council is preparing a list of frequently asked questions\, which will be emailed to the membership for study.  Other questions will arise during the CC\, but some questions can be addressed in that FAQ email.
