First Reading Exodus 20:1-17

A reading from the book of Exodus.

Then God spoke all these words, saying, “I am Your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.  “No gods except me!  “No making for yourselves a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth; no bowing down to them or serving them.  For I, Your God, am a jealous God, and I punish the parents’ fault in the children, the grandchildren, and the great-grandchildren of those who hate me; but I show kindness to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my commandments.

“No uttering the name of Your God to misuse it, for the Most High will not leave unpunished the person who utters God’s name to misuse it.

“Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy.  For six days you will labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath for Your God.  No working on that day, neither you nor your children, nor your workers -women or men – nor your animals, nor the immigrant who lives among you.  For in six days God made the heavens and the earth and the sea and all that these hold, but rested on the seventh day; that is why Your God has blessed the Sabbath day and made it sacred.

“Honor your mother and your father so that you may have a long life in the land that Your God has given to you.  No killing!  No committing adultery!  No stealing!  No bearing false witness against your neighbor!

No coveting your neighbor’s house!  No coveting your neighbor’s spouse, or worker – woman or man – nor ox, or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor!”

The Word of God recorded in the book of Exodus.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 19

R: O God, You have the words of everlasting life.

Your law, O God, is perfect;

it refreshes the soul.

Your rule is to be trusted;

it gives wisdom to the simple.

R: O God, You have the words of everlasting life.

Your precepts, O God, are right;

they gladden the heart.

Your command is clear;

it gives light to the eyes.

R: O God, You have the words of everlasting life.

Fear of You, O God, is holy,

abiding forever.

Your decrees are faithful,

and all of them just.

R:  O God, You have the words of everlasting life.

They are more desirable than gold,

than the purest of gold,

And sweeter than honey are they,

than honey oozing from the comb.

R:  O God, You have the words of everlasting life.
