FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER — Year B

Second Reading: 1 John 3:18-24

A reading from the first letter of John.

My children,

our love is not to be just words or mere talk-

it must be true love, which shows itself in action.

This, then, is how we know that we belong to the truth;
this is how we will be confident in God’s presence,

even if our conscience condemns us.

We know that God is greater than our conscience,
and that God knows everything.

Beloved, if our consciences have nothing to charge us with,
we can be sure that God is with us

and that whatever we ask

we will receive from God’s hands,
because we keep the commandments

and do what is pleasing in God’s sight.

The commandments are these:

that we believe in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ,
and that we love one another as we were told to do.

Whoever keeps these commandments
lives in God and God lives in them.

We know that God lives in us
by the Spirit given to us.
