SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Cultivate: Local Food Connections
DESCRIPTION:COLLECTION RECIPIENT on SEPTEMBER 6 — CULTIVATE: LOCAL FOOD CONNECTIONS \nAll First Sunday donations in September will support Cultivate: Local Food Connections’ Farm to Table for ALL program. Through this program\, Cultivate purchases local foods directly from producers to fill community fridges and food pantries. In addition to direct purchases\, they upcycle local farmers’ abundant or “ugly” produce by making soups and other convenient meals\, maximizing the potential of all that is being grown in the area and minimizing food waste. The fund also supports Iowa Food Cooperative members utilizing SNAP benefits by waiving member fees. \nSupporting small scale\, regenerative farmers is an essential piece of eliminating food insecurity\, as it both feeds the community and envisions and invests in a better system to replace broken and unsustainable food systems. Small scale producers build healthier soils\, capture carbon\, improve water quality\, boost biodiversity\, and create more resilient local food systems — leading to nutrient-dense food\, stronger communities\, and economic stability. Per the Iowa Food System Coalition\, “every $1 spent on Iowa-grown foods generates $1.94 in economic activity.” Local food moving through the community is an investment in physical and social health\, the local economy\, and the planet. \nHilary Burbank\, Program Director\, will participate in our Zoom prayer service and be available online afterwards for a conversation about Cultivate’s organization\, events\, and volunteer opportunities in the greater Des Moines area. \nFor more information\, visit https://cultivatefoodconnections.org/ \nWrite checks either to “Cultivate: Local Food Connections” with “DMIEC” in the memo line or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.   Checks should be mailed to: DMIEC\, P.O. Box 12022\, Des Moines\, IA 50312. \nTo be included in the amount DMIEC sends to the organization First Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by September 20th; if you elect to contribute to the First Sunday recipient after that date\, please mail your check (made payable to Cultivate: Local Food Connections with “DMIEC” in the memo line) directly to Cultivate: Local Food Connections\, 29762 310th St\, Waukee\, IA 50263 and\, if comfortable\, let DMIEC’s Social Justice Committee Chair Kathy Eastman know the amount to assist in recording our community’s giving.

SUMMARY:Community Conversation re Lighting and Audiovisual Elements at DMIEC (shortly after the Worship Service)
DESCRIPTION:The DMIEC Council has approved the discussion of a proposal to update the lighting and audio/visual elements at DMIEC. After the discussion at the Community Conversation\, a vote will be taken by a show of hands to determine whether to issue an email ballot. If approved\, an email ballot will be sent to the membership with a yes or no vote to move forward with the project.\n\n\nThe Ad Hoc Lighting Committee was Barb Corson (Chair)\, Mick Briedis\, David Drey\, Tony Schmitt\, Steve Whitaker\, and David Wright. We began meeting in November of 2025\, and recently completed our deliberations and have the following proposal. We were lucky to have strong expertise and experience in all things electrical\, audio/visual\, and in knowledge of the building. If we had only had Dick Mullen\, we would have had it all!\n\nThe Committee considered many ideas\, upgrades\, and improvements to the lighting and sound system over the last 9 months. Both practical and aspirational. As we worked\, we continued to narrow our focus to what we felt was necessary and what would bring the most value to the community and to the space. Things we found necessary were to 1) bring all areas of the electrical up to code\, 2) rebuild the existing fluorescent fixtures into LED fixtures – existing light switches at the south entrance will be reconfigured and updated as necessary\, 3) increase the Ethernet capacity for better control\, and 4) update the audio/visual system for an improved experience for the congregation.\n\nWe put our final proposal for the lighting improvements out for bid and received two bids from electrical contractors. We propose accepting the lower bid. Upgrades to the sound system\, Ethernet\, and streaming capacity can be completed by members of the Ad Hoc Committee.\n\nThe amount requested by the Ad Hoc Committee is broken down here (updated to net out earmarked donations totaling $10\,000):\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAmount Requested\n\n\nOutput\n\n\nVendor\n\n\nJustification\n\n\n\n\n$25\,000\n\n\nReplace all fluorescent lighting with LED lighting\, some dimmable and some non-dimmable; create zones in the building which can be lighted and adjusted as needed; replace requested switches with wireless switches; update all wiring so that it meets code.\n\n\nTri-City Electric\n\n\nAll ceiling light fixtures will be retrofitted from fluorescent to LED. Many states are phasing out and banning the sale of fluorescent bulbs as they are considered hazardous waste. The color temperature will be warmer than what we have been accustomed to. Our worship space will be grouped into seven different\, dimmable zones\, which will be useful for evening services\, movie nights\, etc. These seven zones will utilize wireless switches\, and the remainder of the lighting will continue to operate from the switches at the south entry of the building. The primary advantages of converting the interior of our building lights will be less maintenance\, higher efficiency\, lower electric usage\, and better performance.\nThe Ad hoc committee\, which has been meeting for almost a year\, believes this update is a responsible way to move forward into the future.\n\n\n\n\n$10\,000\n\n\nUpdate and improve audio/visual systems:  speakers and microphones\, cables\, usability\, Ethernet switch capacity.\n\n\nTony Schmitt and pals\n\n\nReplacing the mounted speakers with speakers distributed in the ceiling will improve sound quality throughout the worship space. Adding microphones\, connections\, and a cable snake adds functionality\, replaces some worn equipment\, and removes many cables under the feet of the musicians. Audio/visual cables in the ceiling are not up to code and should be replaced. Adding Ethernet switch capacity\, an audio processor\, and updating computer equipment will improve DMIEC’s ability to continue to offer services via Zoom and will allow members to stream movies\, lectures\, documentaries\, etc.\n\n\n\n\n$7\,000\n\n\nStandard 20% overage for possible cost increases and/or complications.\n\n\n\n\n\n-$10\,000\nLess: Donations from two members to offset cost of the project\n\n\n\n\n\n$32\,000\n\n\nMaximum net amount requested for these improvements.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMore detailed descriptions of the work to be done will be presented at the meeting. We look forward to answering any questions that you might have at the Community Conversation after the in-person service on September 27th. Members attending on Zoom will be able to participate.\n\nIf you cannot attend the meeting and have questions\, please send them to Barb Corson at corsonbarbara@gmail.com.\n\nAd Hoc Lighting Committee
