SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Community Support Advocates (CSA)
DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday recipient in October is Community Support Advocates (CSA).  CSA is a West Des Moines based not-for-profit serving those impacted by mental illness and disabilities. CSA serves Central Iowa’s most vulnerable individuals and their families\, providing comprehensive services and coordinated care to improve physical\, behavioral\, and social health outcomes\, supporting over 3\,000 individuals and families each month. \nA family living in Iowa whose child is experiencing a major mental health crisis has very few options for community-based support beyond outpatient mental health therapy and medications. Private health insurance does not cover community-based mental health services\, which are designed to help stabilize youth and families\, and to keep youth living in their homes and communities and attending school safely. Community-based support assists with prevention\, stabilization\, and post-crisis support. \nDMIEC’s support will help CSA provide scholarships to those young people who can’t currently access the mental health care and community support they desperately need\, allowing them to stay in the community while receiving that critical care. \nFor more information on this organization\, visit https://teamcsa.org/services/. \nWrite checks either to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line or to “”CSA.” Checks should be placed in the October 12th Collection Basket or mailed to DMIEC\, P.O. SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nEarlier this year\, DMARC recorded the four busiest months of its nearly 50-year history.  Nearly 29\,000 people used at least one of DMARC’s 14 pantries in January and over 79\,000 unique individuals have done so in fiscal year 2025.  Please see additional information on recent food pantries usage here. \nTo learn more\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/  Read DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. DESCRIPTION:COMMUNITY CONVERSATION after in-person worship on October 26 \nThe DMIEC council has identified three important issues for discussion: \n\n\n1. New signage in front of our building\, being planned by the Social Justice Committee. Given that some funding has been donated by a member\, we will hear about what type of sign might be erected\, the message on that sign\, and the details of getting it installed. \n\n\n2. Lighting/electrical/sound system improvements. The Building & Grounds and TechnologyCommittees are gathering information on transforming the ceiling lighting\, audio\, and grid design in our worship space. Our electrical system is old and parts are hard to replace. The council believes it is time to consider an entire revamp of our worship space ceiling design. Generous members have already agreed to put money forward towards this project\, and the council has also earmarked initial funds for the design. Members will hear an overall description of how we might proceed hiring a contractor to design a plan that would then be put forward for bids. Once bids are secured\, the proposal will be brought back to the community for a vote according to our Framework for Shared Decision-Making. \n\n\n3. Building use policy. The council recommends that a committee be formed to revisit our building use policy. Prior to the conversation on October 26\, the community is encouraged to read the policy on our website\, at https://www.dmiec.org/policy-for-use-of-dmiec-building-at- 3306-university/. (Or\, go to Stewardship/Building Use/Policy for Nonsponsored Use of DMIEC Building.) At our conversation\, we will hear how the council views the current policy limits our community needs. If the community votes to revisit the BUP\, a simple majority vote will start that process. We would then discuss the value of an ad hoc committee to rewrite the policy and ask for members to participate on that committee. All members could give input to the committee\, which would make recommendations to our congregation for approval.
