SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Anchored Hope
DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday collection recipient for February is Anchored Hope. \nAt 18\, foster youth age out of the system\, often without the safety net of a family or support system.  As a result\, one in five young adults face immediate homelessness. In Iowa approximately 450 youth age out of foster care each year\, stepping into an uncertain and challenging world. \nAnchored Hope is a new faith-based transitional living program in Ames\, designed for young women ages 18-24 who have aged out of foster care. Through safe housing\, structured programs\, and mentoring\, Anchored Hope provides a pathway to help these young women realize their God-given potential. Offering a supportive community and life-skills training will help them become independent\, thriving adults. The two-year program includes: Life Skills Training; Job Readiness and Education; Health and Wellness; Financial Literacy; and Community. \nAnchored Hope recently purchased a six-bedroom\, four-bathroom house and anticipates welcoming the first residents by July 1. SUMMARY:Aramaic Prayer Group (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Jesus’ teachings were meant to bring us to wholeness and health ~ not make us dependent upon a particular person or sect.  In this on-line course\, we will learn one of Jesus’ most powerful teachings\, the Lord’s Prayer\, as he spoke it in his native language of Aramaic.  Using these words offers a direct connection to the blessing-centered spirituality of Jesus through the vibration\, sound and breath of the words.  In the first part of the Prayer\, we learn how to connect with something greater.  In the second part\, how to care for and live in harmony with each other. \nOn Zoom: 1st Tuesdays\, September 3 – May 6 (except March 11)\, 9:30 – 11AM.  We will do chant\, meditation and body prayer with the Prayer as translated by Neil Douglas-Klotz in his books Prayers of the Cosmos and the more recent Revelations of the Aramaic Jesus.  Offered through the Spiritual Life Circle.  Class limited to 12 participants.  Contact Morgan Rivers (morgan@healingpartners.biz) to register and for more information. \nJoanna Macy writes on the book cover of Prayers of the Cosmos:  “For the many of us who want to peel away centuries of dualistic\, patriarchal forms and recover the life-affirming beauty of our Christian roots\, nothing could be more welcome than this exquisite little volume.” \nAdditional resources available at: https://abwoon.org/

DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. \nDMARC recently recorded the four busiest months of its nearly 50-year history.  Over 29\,500 people used at least one of their 14 pantries in November\, setting an all-time record.  Please see additional information on November usage here. \nTo learn more\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/  Read DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, February 23\, we will have a Community Conversation (CC) after our prayer service to discuss the Sharing Space Committee’s meeting with the Downtown Disciples about possibly renting to them\, and further steps we might take.  Please plan to stay for this conversation\, whether online or in-person\, to help us work through this issue. \nThe minutes from our Feb. 3 meeting with Downtown Disciples were emailed to registered DMIEC members on February 13th and may also be found via this link. We hope you will take a few minutes to read them ahead of our CC so that you will be familiar with the ideas the DD community has.  Do we agree with their ideas? \nAt the conclusion of this CC\, we will decide whether to proceed with an online vote. That vote would determine if DMIEC negotiators should continue with discussions with the DD community for sharing our space.
