SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection – TON of Hope Children's Book Project
DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday collection recipient for November is TON of Hope Children’s Book Project. \nTON of Hope Children’s Book Project is a project of Tent of Nations (TON)\, the Nassar family’s ecological farm and international peace center near Bethlehem\, Palestine. Supported by individuals and organizations in the U.S.\, the project grew out of TON’s children’s summer camp to produce the book\, From the Ground and Up. Through words\, photos\, and imaginative participation\, this interactive children’s book depicts how traumatized children discover their deep roots in the land\, the potential in their seeds\, how to create lives of strength and resiliency\, and how to work together to make a better world.  By inviting readers to share the campers’ experience\, it empowers campers and readers alike. \nTON’s mission is one of empowerment\, peace\, and justice. They act on their mission by refusing to be victims or enemies and practicing non-violent resistance. While the book was created primarily for readers of middle school age\, it conveys TON’s message to readers of all ages. \nFor more information on this organization\, visit https://tentofnations.com/programs-projects/. \nWrite checks either to “Trinity Las Americas” or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.   \nCHECKS SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE November 10th COLLECTION BASKET OR MAILED TO : DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310 \nFirst Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by November 20th; if you elect to contribute to the First Sunday recipient after that date\, please mail your check (made payable to the recipient with “DMIEC” in the memo line) directly to Trinity Las Americas (P.O. Box 41005\, Des Moines\, IA 50311)\, and\, if comfortable\, let DMIEC’s Social Justice Committee Chair Kathy Eastman know the amount to assist in recording our community’s giving.  If you have questions about how to donate or would like to donate using the ACH withdrawal feature\, please contact Susan Barnes (checks) or Jeanine Freeman (ACH) of the Finance Committee. (Info about ACH is available here.)\nThank you for your support!

SUMMARY:Aramaic Prayer Group (via Zoom)
DESCRIPTION:Jesus’ teachings were meant to bring us to wholeness and health ~ not make us dependent upon a particular person or sect.  In this on-line course\, we will learn one of Jesus’ most powerful teachings\, the Lord’s Prayer\, as he spoke it in his native language of Aramaic.  Using these words offers a direct connection to the blessing-centered spirituality of Jesus through the vibration\, sound and breath of the words.  In the first part of the Prayer\, we learn how to connect with something greater.  In the second part\, how to care for and live in harmony with each other. \nOn Zoom: 1st Tuesdays\, September 3 – May 6 (except March 11)\, 9:30 – 11AM.  We will do chant\, meditation and body prayer with the Prayer as translated by Neil Douglas-Klotz in his books Prayers of the Cosmos and the more recent Revelations of the Aramaic Jesus.  Offered through the Spiritual Life Circle.  Class limited to 12 participants.  Contact Morgan Rivers (morgan@healingpartners.biz) to register and for more information. \nJoanna Macy writes on the book cover of Prayers of the Cosmos:  “For the many of us who want to peel away centuries of dualistic\, patriarchal forms and recover the life-affirming beauty of our Christian roots\, nothing could be more welcome than this exquisite little volume.” \nAdditional resources available at: https://abwoon.org/

SUMMARY:Community Conversation
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, November 24 we will have a members Community Conversation (CC) after our prayer service to discuss the feasibility of sharing space with another worshiping community\, such as Downtown Disciples.  Please plan to stay\, whether online or in-person\, to help us work through this issue. \nThe Council would like to thank the members of the Space Sharing committee\, which was borne out of our retreat held in August 2023:  Kathy Eastman\, Martha Gelhaus\, Jean Minahan\, Kathy Olah\, Lars Peterson\, Donna Richard-Langer\, Kathi Sircy\, Ivan Webber\, and Kris Wells.  They have spent countless hours in discussion and research\, with the final report and their recommendation provided in a position paper presented at the Community Conversation on 10/27/2024 and posted on our website\, as part of the notes from that October 27th CC. \nWe need to hear from members about your thoughts\, questions\, and ideas.  At the conclusion of this CC\, we will decide whether to proceed with an online vote.  That vote would allow DMIEC members to proceed with discussions with the Downtown Disciples community for sharing our space. \nIn advance of the CC\, the council is preparing a list of frequently asked questions\, which will be emailed to the membership for study.  Other questions will arise during the CC\, but some questions can be addressed in that FAQ email.
