SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Lutheran World Relief
DESCRIPTION:Our August “First Sunday” recipient will be Lutheran World Relief (“LWR”) \nLutheran World Relief has operated since 1946\, helping the people of Europe in the aftermath of WWII.  LWR works to better the lives of others through education assistance\, agricultural development\, medical clinic support\, and feeding hungry and displaced people.  Recent tragic conditions in Ukraine\, Turkey\, and Yemen have been the focus of many LWR aid dollars. \nLast year’s Lutheran World Relief projects included: \n\nIn remote areas of Peru\, LWR formed a women’s cooperative to empower women to grow cacao. They turn the cacao into chocolate which has won international awards.  Their livelihoods are improved immensely through their sales of chocolate.\nIn Tanzania\, fertilizer costs have crippled farming.  With LWR’s help\, farmers learn to grow pyrethrum\, which is used as an organic insecticide and does not require fertilizer.  It can be harvested every 2 weeks\, 10 months of the year.  LWR enabled farmers to build drying facilities for the pyrethrum\, which they can then sell for cash in hand.  This is a sustainable and profitable way of farming.\nMobile clinics in Yemen provide emergency health assistance to vulnerable Internally Displaced People in Yemen. The clinics-on-wheels provide care to four refugee camps and over 1\,200 people. A  specific issues these clinics address is healthcare for women who\, in Yemen\, are not allowed to go to the hospital by themselves.  The clinics provide acute care and help with vaccines\, antibiotics\, and health screenings.\n\nOur First Sunday collection will be used in a crisis area with pressing needs\, perhaps Ukraine.  Rev. Tim Krick of LWR recently traveled to Ukraine and Turkey and will join us for our Zoom service on August 6 to share his eyewitness stories. \nFor more information on this organization\, visit https://lwr.org. \n  \nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO: \nDMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA  50310 \nChecks can be written either to “Lutheran World Relief” or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  \nWe would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Ed Arnold of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.

SUMMARY:2023 Discernment Retreat - Session 1: Exploring Our Grounding
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our 2023 Discernment Retreat\, free and open to up to 60 DMIEC members. This retreat involves 2 sessions\, each facilitated by John Noble\, M.Div. Sessions will be held at Scottish Rite Park (2909 Woodland Avenue) with a free catered meal provided at each session. Thanks to a generous grant from the John and Roberta Hydar Grant for Intentional Eucharistic Communities\, there is no cost to attendees. \nSessions will each run 3pm-7pm at Scottish Rite\, on Thursday\, August 17 and Saturday\, August 19. While we understand it won’t be possible for everyone\, we encourage you to do your best to attend both sessions. If you can only attend one\, please do so! Just sign up for the session(s) you will attend via the following sign-up sheets: \n\nSession 1 (August 17): Sign up here.\nSession 2 (August 19): Sign up here.\n\n** If you have any dietary restrictions and/or accessibility needs\, please email Mary Ann Koch directly with that info. kochmaryann2014@gmail.com \nHere’s what we plan to cover in each session: \nSession 1: Exploring our Grounding (August 17) \n Where did the Des Moines Intentional Eucharistic Community come from? What do we share in common as a faith community\, even across lines of difference? This session will explore the values that hold us together as a community\, and how those values can ground us if and when we face a “community crossroads” or disagreement on issues. \nSession 2: Exploring our Growing (August 19) \nWhat does it mean to be an aging community that stewards resources and relationships? How do we equitably hold and distribute our roles and responsibilities? How do we make decisions as a community in a way that incorporates everyone’s voice? \n\nDiscernment resources and discoveries from each session will be shared widely with DMIEC community members. This retreat is a beginning\, not an end\, and we hope it will spark conversations that all community members\, not just retreat attendees\, can take part in as we move forward.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. The fiscal year just ended was the busiest in DMARC emergency food pantries’ nearly 50-year history  The 22\,000 people assisted in June 2023 was the second highest number on record. 1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry.  For recent info about local food needs and services\, please click here. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nTwo ways to donate: \nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket. \nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address*\, 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
