The first people of our continent suffer from food insecurity and hunger for many reasons\, but history makes clear that European ancestors bear much of the responsibility. \n     NAHA takes great care to provide Native American families with food\, clothing\, home goods\, propane heaters\, and money to buy propone to help get them through the very cold winter months. Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nBeginning on Good Friday 2021\, we have held a weekly Sidewalk Solidarity event at 4:00 p.m. every Friday afternoon as weather permitted. We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones to police violence. We open with prayer inside DMIEC and speak the victims’ names\, then stand in silence for nine minutes in front of the building.  We go back inside to close with prayer\, song\, and reflection.  If weather is not good for outside\, we stay inside the building. The reason is the Council has been discussing issues that are converging; so please read on: \nBuilding use – Other than Sundays when we have in-person prayer service\, there are meetings\, gatherings\, retreats\, events other than prayer services that are possible\, and in reality already taking place\, e.g.\, committee meetings\, students from Ruby Van Meter who clean our space\, Council meetings\, Sidewalk Solidarity Friday afternoons\, Open Book (through CultureALL) meeting with DMIEC community. We may offer our space for music recitals (City Voices)\, and we will be hosting architecture students from Kansas State\, in early March\, who want to tour our building. Overall\, we’re pleased to see our building used and want to encourage more use in the future. \nHospitality — As we’ve moved back to sharing the bread of eucharist\, there is a desire to move towards some simple hospitality after our in-person prayer services. While this might be in the (near?) future\, we want to remain open to the possibility of other gatherings with food\, e.g.\, movie night with snacks\, light refreshments at a meeting\, or celebratory meals together. \nAnd these two issues bring us to:\nMasking policy – In light of the facts that some prudent public health masking advice is situation-dependent\, many\, if not most of us\, are masking in our daily lives depending upon the circumstances. We believe all in our community have been vaccinated and are prudent. Our building has been improved with an air filtration system designed to mitigate virus in the air.  In light of this\, the Council is considering a “masks optional” policy for in-person prayer services and also other gatherings & meetings. However\, the Council seeks input from all community members on this issue. So we ask that you’ll weigh in and listen to discussion this Sunday. \nAs in any other situation in our daily lives\, each of us dons a mask to protect ourselves\, and/or others.
