CultureALL believes that\nsharing the cultural richness of our community with others will elevate our society and\nthe quality of life for all. When Iowans PARTICIPATE in cultural traditions\, we begin to\nAPPRECIATE the diversity around us. The experiences ELEVATE our attitudes and\nbehaviors to be more accepting and able to bridge differences. \nWhat is Open Book?\nCultureALL trains local people to become “Books” by helping them craft seven-ten\nminute stories that are shared with a small group. These stories come from the lived\nexperiences of the Books. After the stories are shared\, the Books facilitate a dialogue\nwith the participants. Story sharing makes space for listeners to embrace more robust\nand complete narratives about others and about themselves. CultureALL works with\ncommunity organizations/businesses to find space for the Books to share their stories. \nWhere does DMIEC come in?\nDonations from DMIEC will provide funding for Open Book training at Corinthian\nBaptist Church for 10 people to become Books. The Books would also be trained as\nfacilitators to guide conversation about topics that arise from an honest conversation\nabout Black heritage in our community. Open Book could shine a light on a church\ncommunity that has been in Iowa almost 125 years. Stories may focus on experiences of\nracism\, family heritage\, faith and culture. These stories would both honor differences\nand highlight our shared humanity. Books would be paid for the training and for the\nstory-sharing at the churches from DMIEC funding. \nHow will this project enrich the community?\nCorinthian Open Books will share their stories with three churches: DMIEC\, Plymouth\nCongregational Church and the Unitarian Universalist Church. The newly trained Books\nwould also be added to CultureALL’s Open Book catalog and would enhance our\nprogramming in schools\, other churches in the community\, libraries\, businesses and\ncommunity events. \nWant to know more or have questions? Several DMIEC committees work towards these efforts\, while individuals read and discuss books and seek out other ways to enhance understanding of racial injustice issues. \nBeginning on Good Friday 2021\, we have held a weekly Sidewalk Solidarity event every Friday afternoon as weather permitted. We hope this weekly commitment will demonstrate our desire to stand as allies and show our solidarity with the Black families who have lost loved ones. An optional debriefing follows at 4:00 p.m. each Friday. \nAt 3:30 p.m. each Friday\, we gather to honor Black lives lost to police violence.  We open with prayer inside DMIEC and speak their names\, then stand in silence for nine minutes in front of the building.  We go back inside to close with prayer\, song\, and reflection.  If weather is not good for outside\, we stay inside the building.
