DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our next opportunity to help provide a meal at Central Iowa Shelter and Services\, 1420 Mulberry Street in Des Moines.  The food will arrive already prepared from the Johnston Hy-Vee. Volunteers needed to assist in serving and hospitality/fellowship. We need several volunteers to be available about 5:30 p.m. and everyone else to arrive by 6:00 p.m. so we can make assignments\, get the foods set up\, and be ready to serve at 6:30. Serving will be completed about 7:30 p.m.. The shelter staff handles cleanup. \nIf you sign up as a volunteer and are interested in carpooling\, please also let us know on the sign-up sheet if you need\, or are willing to offer\, a ride from the DMIEC parking lot.  Otherwise\, please show up at the shelter (1420 Mulberry) at your scheduled time. SUMMARY:Rescheduled First Sunday Collection - Self-Help International
DESCRIPTION:Self-Help International is a 501(c)(3) non-profit\, non-governmental organization founded in Waverly\, Iowa in 1959 with a mission to alleviate hunger by helping people help themselves.  Self-Help operates integrated sustainable development programs in Ghana\, West Africa and Nicaragua\, Central America to help rural families improve quality of life with dignity\, with emphasis on improving nutrition and food security through agricultural and economic development\, empowering women and girls\, and accessing clean water. \nOur September 8 First Sunday collection will support the expansion of Self-Help’s Teen Girls Club to two more communities in rural Ghana.  The Teen Girls Club is increasing high school admission rates for young women and preventing teenage pregnancy by providing a space for girls in junior high school to come together to support each other\, receive supplemental tutoring and reading assistance\, learn practical and marketable skills\, and engage in discussions around confidence\, women’s health\, and self-esteem.  Learn more at https://www.selfhelpinternational.org/tag/teen-girls-club/ \nChecks may be written either to “Self-Help International” or “DMIEC.”  Thank you for your generous support of this and all of our First Sunday organizations!
