SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Palliative Care Association of Uganda
DESCRIPTION:COLLECTION RECIPIENT on February 1:  PALLIATIVE CARE ASSOCIATION OF UGANDA \nOur First Sunday Collection for January will benefit the Palliative Care Association of Uganda (“PCAU”). \nPCAU works to accelerate the provision and integration of palliative care into Uganda’s healthcare system and through community-based partners. \nThe Special Hearts to Nurture Every Child (SHiNE Child) Program is a community-based navigation program for seriously ill children and their families in Southwestern Uganda. Approximately 3\,000 pediatric cancer cases occur every year in Uganda\, with a survival rate less than 50%\, significantly lower than the global average of 80%. SHINE Child’s integrated approach supports medical\, psychologic\, educational\, and socio-economic needs of children and families. This approach restores dignity\, supports treatment access and adherence\, and builds resilience to the most vulnerable households. Support  includes: transportation assistance to medical appointments; post-chemotherapy nutrition support; education support to foster hope; and bereavement for families if a child dies. \nA previous First Sunday recipient\, SHINE Child started as a small pilot initiative and has grown into an established program collaborating with Uganda Cancer Institute\, local hospitals\, local Lions Club\, and other partners who contribute resources. They supported 66 children and families in 2025. More are in need. With additional support\, PCAU hopes to grow the reach of this program with increased support for hospital stays\, access to more nutritional foods\, and greater community awareness. \nFor more information about the SHiNE Child Program and PCAU\, please visit\nhttps://pcauganda.org/special-hearts-to-nurture-every-child-shine-child-program/. \nChecks can be made payable either to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line or to “Global Partners in Care” with “PCAU-SHiNE” in the memo line.  Checks should be placed in the February 8th Collection Basket or mailed to: \nDMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310. \nTo be included in the amount DMIEC sends to the organization First Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by February 20th.
