SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Urban Bicycle Food Ministry - Des Moines (UBFM)
DESCRIPTION:Urban Bicycle Food Ministry-Des Moines\, a community-based and non-denominational organization\, welcomes anyone to be part of their ministry. Since 2015\, they’ve served radical hospitality\, one burrito at a time\, without preaching\, proselytizing\, or attempts to convert. What is “radical hospitality?” Every Thursday\, all year long\, they prepare and deliver food and personal items by bike and car to people on the streets — living under a bridge\, in a tent near the river or railroad tracks\, in a hole dug in the side of a hill\, or in subsidized housing. Think Uber Eats for people without addresses or the ability to pay. \nWinter season presents unique challenges to serving folks on the street. Besides food\, UBFM offers a wide variety of items including clothing\, toiletries\, batteries\, and flashlights. They rely on in-kind donations from volunteers and other supporters\, but often run short on winter-survival items such as winter coats\, heavy blankets\, insulated gloves\, chemical hand/foot warmers\, and hooded sweatshirts. Extra funds donated by DMIEC will permit UBFM to maintain a supply of these life-sustaining items. \nFor more information\, visit https://ubfmdsm.com/. \nChecks can be made payable to Urban Bicycle Food Ministry-Des Moines or to DMIEC with “First Sunday” in the memo line. \nChecks should be placed in the December 14th Collection Basket or mailed to DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310 \nFirst Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by December 20th; if you elect to contribute to the First Sunday recipient after that date\, please mail your check (made payable to the organization with “DMIEC” in the memo line) directly to Urban Bicycle Food Ministry – Des Moines\, 511 Des Moines Street\, Des Moines\, IA 50309

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nOn November 3rd\, the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network assisted 2\,494 unique individuals – setting a single-day record for the most people assisted. This is the busiest day on record in the 50-year history of the network of Des Moines metro pantries and the start of an extremely challenging period for our neighbors living without support from SNAP. Of the people assisted yesterday\, 1 in 3 were currently enrolled in SNAP. Earlier this year\, DMARC recorded the four busiest months of its nearly 50-year history.  Nearly 29\,000 people used at least one of DMARC’s 14 pantries in January and over 79\,000 unique individuals have done so in fiscal year 2025.  Please see additional information on recent food pantries usage here. with a special update about the new SNAP situation. \nTo learn more\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/  Read DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. To learn about DMARC’s new executive director\, click here. \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket.\nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address\,* 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
