SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection – Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice (IMMJ)
DESCRIPTION:Our First Sunday collection recipient for October is Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice (IMMJ).  There is a critical need for legal services for refugees and immigrants in Des Moines and across the state. Support for IMMJ will be used in two primary areas: \n\nFirst\, to meet the urgent need for immigration legal services by providing for immigrants and refugees who are victims of crime\, as well as any low-income immigrants applying for citizenship\, permanent residency (green cards)\, humanitarian relief\, family reunification\, DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)\, and TPS (Temporary Protected Status).\nSecond\, to advocate for systemic change through grassroot community organizing and civic engagement by developing leaders who want to learn how the government works and how to protect themselves and their communities against abuse in the workplace. We also work with newly naturalized U.S. citizens to ensure they are registered to vote\, understand how to vote\, have a plan to vote\, and understand how elections work on the local\, state\, and federal levels.\n\nFor more information on IMMJ\, visit https://www.iowammj.org. \nWrite checks either to “Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice” or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.   \nCHECKS SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE October 13th COLLECTION BASKET OR MAILED TO : DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310 \nFirst Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by October 20th; if you elect to contribute to the First Sunday recipient after that date\, please let DMIEC’s Social Justice Committee Chair Kathy Eastman know the amount to assist in recording our community’s giving. If you have questions about how to donate or would like to donate using the ACH withdrawal feature\, please contact Susan Barnes (checks) or Jeanine Freeman (ACH) of the Finance Committee. (Info about ACH is available here.)\nThank you for your support! \n

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real.  In 2023\, over 65\,000 individuals were assisted\, more than a third of whom were 17 years old or younger.  Nearly one in four City of Des Moines residents used a DMARC pantry.  The daily record for most visits on a day was broken 23 times last year. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket.\nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address\,* 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
