SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection – Anawim Housing
DESCRIPTION:September’s “First Sunday” collection will benefit Anawim Housing. \nIn 1987\, Sr. Stella Neill\, RSM\, created Anawim Housing\, a nonprofit focused on providing permanent rental homes for low-income families. Since then\, Anawim has become a leader in affordable housing\, from the renovation of a single duplex in 1989 to the development and management of 221 units by 2010.  Anawim operates under the Housing First Model\, guided by the belief that people need basic necessities like food and a safe place to live before attending to other critical needs. Through evidence-based programs and services\, the Anawim staff addresses needs related to serious mental illness\, substance abuse\, physical disability\, HIV\, domestic abuse\, and unemployment. \nToday\, Anawim is the largest provider of Permanent Supportive Housing in Iowa (which serves individuals with disabilities)\, serving 240 households and almost 400 individuals. Unfortunately\, HUD grant funding has not kept pace with the rental market or utility increases. Donations will help fund a $111\,092 shortfall of rent and utilities for one of the Permanent Supportive Housing programs. \nFor more information on this organization\, visit anawimhousing.org. Or contact Claudette McDonald\, cmsophia7@cs.com\, or Judy Porter\, judyporter@hotmail.com \n  \nWrite checks either to “Anawim Housing” or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  \nCHECKS SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE SEPTEMBER 8th COLLECTION BASKET OR MAILED TO : DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310 \nWrite checks either to “Anawim Housing”  or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  First Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by September 20th; if you elect to contribute to the First Sunday recipient after that date\, please let DMIEC’s Social Justice Committee Chair Kathy Eastman know the amount to assist in recording our community’s giving. If you have questions about how to donate or would like to donate using the ACH withdrawal feature\, please contact Susan Barnes (checks) or Jeanine Freeman (ACH) of the Finance Committee. (Info about ACH is available here.)\nThank you for your support!

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real.  In 2023\, over 65\,000 individuals were assisted\, more than a third of whom were 17 years old or younger.  Nearly one in four City of Des Moines residents used a DMARC pantry.  The daily record for most visits on a day was broken 23 times last year. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket.\nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address\,* 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
