SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection – Raising Haiti Foundation
DESCRIPTION:August’s “First Sunday” collection will benefit the Raising Haiti Foundation (RHF).  RHF’s mission is to empower the poor in rural Haiti to improve their quality of\nlife\, identifying three components needed to create community sustainability: \n\n– Grassroots community development\, fostering organizational skills and empowering\ncommunities to determine their own greatest needs.\n– Human resource development through education and local training.\n– Economic opportunities\, improving the lives of individual farmers and community members on a gender-equitable basis.\n\nSupport from DMIEC will help continue an agro-forestry program in the community of Sarrazin\, Haiti. The program empowers farmers to establish a tree nursery. In exchange they earn crop seeds\, agricultural hand tools\, and training\, items critical to the success of smallholder farmers. The program addresses deforestation and climate change while enabling participating farmers to increase their harvests. It results in an average increase of 40% for crop yields and 50-100% increase in household income. The goals for the 2025 agro-forestry program in Sarrazin include: \n\n– Grow 90\,000 trees;\n– Empower 800 farmers to earn crop seeds\, agricultural hand tools\, and training in improved\nfarming techniques;\n– Care for goats in the animal husbandry component of the program.\n\nRHF began funding the Sarrazin program in 2019 with support from generous donors who are no longer able to contribute. Support from DMIEC for this important program would be most appreciated. For more information\, visit https://raisinghaiti.org . \nCHECKS SHOULD BE PLACED IN THE AUGUST 11th COLLECTION BASKET OR MAILED TO : DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310 \nWrite checks either to “Raising Haiti Foundation”  or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  First Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by August 20th; if you elect to contribute to the First Sunday recipient after that date\, please let DMIEC’s Social Justice Committee Chair Kathy Eastman know the amount to assist in recording our community’s giving. If you have questions about how to donate or would like to donate using the ACH withdrawal feature\, please contact Susan Barnes (checks) or Jeanine Freeman (ACH) of the Finance Committee. (Info about ACH is available here.)\nThank you for your support!

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real.  In 2023\, over 65\,000 individuals were assisted\, more than a third of whom were 17 years old or younger.  Nearly one in four City of Des Moines residents used a DMARC pantry.  The daily record for most visits on a day was broken 23 times last year. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket.\nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address\,* 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
