SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Des Moines Refugee Support
DESCRIPTION:Our June “First Sunday” recipient will be Des Moines Refugee Support. \nDes Moines Refugee Support (DMRS) assists refugees\, in particular young students with their many needs\, including clothing\, supplies\, transportation\, and meals. DMRS also seeks to provide families with necessities for households\, transportation for work and medical appointments\, and any of the thousands of things we take for granted. \nFunds from DMIEC’s First Sunday Collection will be used this summer to help 100 kids go to a week of overnight camp\, 60 kids to take a week of swimming lessons\, 16 kids to do a week of robotics camp\, and 23 kids to play in a soccer tournament in Minneapolis.  Kids will get trips to the Science Center\, the Art Center\, the zoo\, and Adventureland.  DMRS believes all kids should have the opportunity to do these fun childhood activities\, which means paying for the activities\, plus transporting and supervising. \nDMRS uses Facebook to communicate with hundreds of volunteers about opportunities to serve as well as information about resources in the community that volunteers can access for the refugees.  For more information on this organization\, visit https://www.facebook.com/DSMRefugeeSupport . \nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO: \nDMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA  50310 \nChecks can be written either to “Des Moines Refugee Support” or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  \nWe would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Ed Arnold of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. 2022 saw a 53% increase in new pantry users over 2021.  1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022.  The DMARC pantries served over 53\,000 individuals in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry.  DMARC experienced a record-breaking number of people seeking food assistance in any March — 19\,410 visitors.  Almost 1\,500 of those were first-time visitors — also a record-breaking amount.  DMARC saw 1\,515 people come in to receive assistance on April 4 — the second highest number ever in the non-profit’s nearly 50-year existence.  The highest day? May 3 of this year. For recent info about local food needs and services\, please click here. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nTwo ways to donate: \nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket. \nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address*\, 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
