SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Meals from the Heartland
DESCRIPTION:You don’t have to look far to see hunger; it’s right here in Iowa. It is a staggering problem – not just in developing countries\, but here at home and across the nation.\nEvery 10 seconds a child dies of hunger-related issues. \nTo help support our Iowa-based meals distribution partners\, Meals from the Heartland will host a focused day of service on January 17\, 2022 (Martin Luther King Day). Our goal is to package and distribute 150\,000 life-saving Taco Mac meals to our local food pantries in Dallas and Polk County. \nMeals from the Heartland does not receive government funding. We need an additional $5\,000 to package these meals on MLK Day. Thank you\, DMIEC\, for making a difference to help feed starving children and families. SUMMARY:Special Christmas Eve Collection - Catholic Worker House
DESCRIPTION:As has been our tradition\, the Christmas Eve collection will be for the Des Moines Catholic Worker House. It will help pay for upcoming repair projects at the Dingman House at 1310 7th St. in Des Moines: kitchen makeover (including patching holes in the ceiling from current and past plumbing issues) and sidewalk\, landscaping\, and porch repairs. With the help of many volunteers\, the  Worker House has served meals through another devastating year of the pandemic. In a kitchen sized for a single family\, they prepare 600-750 pounds of hot food each week and serve it out a side  window of the Dingman House. The south side of the house serves as the “storeroom” where folks can get anything from razors and groceries to blankets and clothing. \nPlease make checks out to “Catholic Worker House” and not to DMIEC. Checks should be mailed to: DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310. We would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC.
