SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Friends of Sabeel of North America
DESCRIPTION:COLLECTION RECIPIENT on JANUARY 4:  FRIENDS OF SABEEL OF NORTH AMERICA \nOur First Sunday Collection for January will benefit Friends of Sabeel North America (FOSNA)\, “a Christian Voice for Palestine.” FOSNA is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit\, ecumenical Christian organization that seeks justice and peace in the Holy Land through education\, advocacy\, and nonviolent action. \nOf FOSNA’s many programs\, none are more impactful than their witness delegations of US Christian leaders to Jerusalem and the West Bank. John Noble joined one such delegation in Spring 2025. With background knowledge gained from his experience\, John will join our service and stay for the breakout session to represent FOSNA’s funding needs going forward for future delegations.  \nFunds collected will support FOSNA’s contribution to several delegations in 2026\, providing orientations before delegates travel safely to Palestine and opportunities for advocacy and community-building upon their return. FOSNA’s support of these delegations before and after the trips allows their partners at Sabeel Jerusalem to focus on getting delegates to and from Palestine safely\, creating transformative programming on the ground\, and building relationships with diverse communities. \nMost importantly\, contributions will help FOSNA build a national network of peacemakers who have returned from these witness and solidarity delegations having built relationships with Muslim\, Christian\, and Jewish partners on the ground.  \nPast delegations have represented interfaith leaders and advocates from a variety of social justice movements. In 2026\, FOSNA plans delegations for various denominational leaders\, librarians and archivists\, and young adults active in racial justice movements. Learn more about FOSNA’s contribution to these witness and solidarity delegations at https://www.fosna.org/delegations.  To learn more about FOSNA generally\, click here.  \nChecks can be made payable either to “Friends of Sabeel North America” or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line \nChecks should be placed in the January 11th Collection Basket or mailed to DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310. \nTo be included in the amount DMIEC sends to the organization First Sunday checks must be received by DMIEC by January 20th; if you elect to contribute to the First Sunday recipient after that date\, please mail your check (made payable to the organization with “DMIEC” in the memo line) directly to Friends of Sabeel North America\, P.O. Box 3192\, Greenwood Village\, CO 80155\, and\, if comfortable\, let DMIEC’s Social Justice Committee Chair Kathy Eastman know the amount to assist in recording our community’s giving.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nOn November 3rd\, the Des Moines Area Religious Council (DMARC) Food Pantry Network assisted 2\,494 unique individuals – setting a single-day record for the most people assisted. That was the busiest day on record in the 50-year history of the network of Des Moines metro pantries and the start of an extremely challenging period for our neighbors living without support from SNAP. Of the people assisted yesterday\, 1 in 3 were currently enrolled in SNAP. Earlier this year\, DMARC recorded the four busiest months of its nearly 50-year history.  Nearly 29\,000 people used at least one of DMARC’s 14 pantries in January and over 79\,000 unique individuals have done so in fiscal year 2025. \nTo learn more\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/ \nHere are two ways to donate: \n\nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket.\nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
