SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Iowa Legal Aid Hotline for Older Iowans
DESCRIPTION:The proceeds of our January 7 “First Sunday” collection will benefit the Iowa Legal Aid’s Legal Hotline for Older Iowans\, which provides free legal advice\, brief services\, and referrals on cases covering a wide range of non-criminal legal matters. It helps with problems concerning health care\, housing\, public benefits\, elder abuse\, nursing homes\, legal planning\, consumer protections\, and other issues facing the state’s oldest residents. The Hotline’s primary objective is to help older Iowans prevent and resolve legal problems\, avoid victimization\, and remain independent by increasing their access to legal assistance.  For more information\, visit https://www.iowalegalaid.org/issues/60-elder-law. \n  \nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO:  DMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA  50310 \nChecks can be written either to “Iowa Legal Aid” with “Hotline” in the memo line or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  \nWe would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Susan Barnes of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. The fiscal year just ended was the busiest in DMARC emergency food pantries’ nearly 50-year history  The 22\,000 people assisted in June 2023 was the second highest number on record. 1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided.
