SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Climate Land Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Our April “First Sunday” collection recipient will be Climate Land Leaders.  Climate Land Leaders are working with compassion and commitment to address the climate crisis on their lands. As landowners\, they implement ambitious conservation projects\, sharing with and learning from each other\, and serving as leaders on climate policy and equity initiatives. \nTheir vision: Land stewards build soil health\, increase biodiversity\, and protect water so ecosystems and communities can thrive in a rapidly changing climate.\nTheir mission: Landowners create community and support to alleviate climate change through land stewardship and conservation. \nAt year-end 2022\, 68 individuals who own 23\,000+ acres of farm and forest land in IA\, MN\, and WI participate in Climate Land Leaders. The Initiative is growing rapidly: By year-end 2024\, 200+ individuals who control 75\,000 acres will participate. These landowners are leaders in their faith-based communities\, environmental groups\, arts organizations\, and more. They are bringing the climate emergency and the role of land use and farming to front and center of the debate. \nDMIEC donations will be used to strengthen the Climate Land Leaders Initiative’s outreach efforts by training individual Climate Land Leaders\, using staff time to help them hone their messages\, secure high quality photographs of them\, and help them place their opinions in the media. The focus is on building a broad base of leaders around Iowa and the region. \nFor more information\, visit climatelandleaders.org. \nChecks can be written either to “Climate Land Leaders” or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line. We would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC at P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA 50310. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Ed Arnold of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. 2022 saw a 53% increase in new pantry users over 2021.  1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022.  The DMARC pantries served over 53\,000 individuals in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry.  DMARC experienced a record-breaking number of people seeking food assistance in any March — 19\,410 visitors.  Almost 1\,500 of those were first-time visitors — also a record-breaking amount.  DMARC saw 1\,515 people come in to receive assistance on April 4 — the second highest number ever in the non-profit’s nearly 50-year existence.  The highest day? January 3 of this year. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nTwo ways to donate: \nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket. \nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address*\, 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
