SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Just Voices
DESCRIPTION:Our December “First Sunday” collection recipient will be Just Voices.  Just Voices is a 501c(3) founded in Des Moines in 2019. Their mission is to build a platform that educates\, advocates\, and collaborates to end racially biased policing in Des Moines and across Iowa. Funds received from DMIEC will primarily be spent on costs related to publishing an in-depth study of the 2020 Protests in Des Moines following George Floyd’s murder.  Many major cities in America have completed their studies of the protests in their cities and evaluated the police response and lessons learned to determine best practices for the future.  The City of Des Moines and Des Moines Police Department have chosen not to do a study.  This decision was made despite more than 40 protests that occurred in Des Moines\, with over 200 arrests. There are eight pending lawsuits against Des Moines and the DMPD\, representing 23 plaintiffs\, currently in progress. For more information\, go to https://justvoicesia.org/. \n\nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO: \nDMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA  50310 \nChecks can be written either to “Just Voices” or “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  \nWe would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Ed Arnold of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations. \n  \nNOMINATIONS FOR FIRST SUNDAY COLLECTIONS WELCOME\nIs there a nonprofit organization you support and are passionate about?  Please consider nominating it as a recipient of a First Sunday collection. The Social Justice Committee is always looking for local\, regional\, national\, or international charitable organizations that support the catholic social teachings of human dignity\, love\, and justice.  The First Sunday Nomination Form is available at https://www.dmiec.org/first-sunday-nomination-form/. \nOr you may contact Kathy Eastman at keastman33@gmail.com and she will send a form to you.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Before the pandemic began\, DMARC pantries were already operating at a 10% increase over 2019 levels. As the economic crisis surrounding the pandemic  worsened\, pantry use grew exponentially. \nNovember 1 was DMARC’s busiest day ever\, serving 1\,500 customers at its 15 metro pantries. The need for food assistance continues to grow due to reduction of federal food benefits and growing inflation. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here.  ** For a deeper dive into DMARC’s databank info about usage\, sites\, etc.\, click here. ** \nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address*\, 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
