SUMMARY:First Sunday Collection - Palliative Care Association of Uganda (PCAU)
DESCRIPTION:Our July “First Sunday” collection recipient will be Palliative Care Association of Uganda (“PCAU”). \nPCAU – Palliative Care Association of Uganda was formed in 1999. Palliative care is specialized medical care for people living with a serious illness. This type of care is focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of the illness. The goal is to improve quality of life for both the patient and the family.  Only 11% of those who need pain control and palliative care can access it in Uganda which includes the children.\n\nPCAU Executive Director\, Mark Mwesiga\, is committed to the needs of Uganda children who are suffering with serious illness. PCAU\, with the help of our first Sunday donations\, will support a program for children living in very rural areas who are diagnosed with cancer.  Why do this?  A recent research project found that most children did not return to the hospital after their initial cancer diagnosis because the family couldn’t afford the transportation\, treatment and needed supplies/equipment.  For more information about the organization\, please visit its website: https://pcauganda.org \nFunds from the July “First Sunday” collection will:\n \n\n –provide transportation to the hospital for children with cancer to receive their treatment\, \n-help provide treatment and the medical supplies and supportive devices they need such as crutches and wheelchairs\,\n-provide food for the children and their caregivers during hospital appointments\,\n-help provide financial support for the palliative care nurse and the social worker to conduct home visits for these children\,\n-and\, if possible\, provide play equipment at the hospital for the children waiting for their appointments\, recognizing that play is a form of therapy for children. \n\n  \nCHECKS SHOULD BE MAILED TO: \nDMIEC\, P.O. Box 30065\, Des Moines\, IA  50310 \nChecks can be written either to “Global Partners in Care” or to “DMIEC” with “First Sunday” in the memo line.  \nWe would prefer that all checks be mailed to DMIEC. If you mail your check directly to the organization\, please inform Ed Arnold of the amount\, if you feel comfortable\, so the Social Justice Committee can get an accurate count of donations.

SUMMARY:DMARC Emergency Food Pantries Sunday Special Collection
DESCRIPTION:Our DMIEC community works to address food insecurity issues in the Des Moines metro area via a special collection for the DMARC Emergency Food Pantries on the fourth Sunday of every month. \nThe need is real. The fiscal year just ended was the busiest in DMARC emergency food pantries’ nearly 50-year history  The 22\,000 people assisted in June 2023 was the second highest number on record. 1 in 6 City of Des Moines residents used a food pantry in 2022. \nAnd that need has not subsided. The combination of inflated food prices\, an end to COVID benefits\, and lingering pandemic hardships is driving more people to seek assistance at the pantry.  For recent info about local food needs and services\, please click here. \nFor more information\, please visit the DMARC Food Pantries website https://www.dmarcunited.org/food/\nRead DMARC’s most recent quarterly newsletter here. \nTwo ways to donate: \nVia special envelopes available at DMIEC on in-person fourth Sundays. Please write checks to “DMARC\,” include a note with/on your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community\, put the check in the envelope\, and put the envelope in the collection basket. \nSend donation checks directly to DMARC. Please write checks to “DMARC” and mail to DMARC at its *new address*\, 100 Army Post Road\, Des Moines\, IA 50315. Please include a note with your check indicating that you are part of the DMIEC community.
